About

About

The AUTOMAT project (under Horizon Europe funding) strives to revolutionize battery recycling and reuse through the development of fully automated disassembly and sorting systems. Targeting electronic waste and battery-embedded devices, AUTOMAT integrates cutting-edge AI, machine learning, and digital tools to ensure high efficiency and environmental sustainability. This project not only aims to streamline the recycling process but also to introduce secure digital tracking through Digital Battery Passports, which will enhance transparency and accountability in the battery value chain.

Ambitions

Ambitions

1. Digitally supported automated Device-to-Component (DTC) disassembly solution
AutoMat Production targets: average dismantling time from 450 to 200 hours as a result of fully automated harsh and hazardous tasks run in the robotic cell. Selectivity of component sorting >95%. At least a material sorting efficiency leading to 85% recovery and re-use rates of secondary raw battery materials

2. Advanced battery discharge system with integrated energy recovery and IES
AutoMat Production targets: Discharge process applicable to all battery chemistry and forms, Current and voltage control mode (CC, CV) • CC-CV mode switch on the fly, EIS frequency range: 1mHz to 10kHz, EIS current <10A,30% testing times, with respect to non-integrated systems.

3. Digital Platform for Digital Product/Battery Passport related decision support services
AutoMat Production targets: 100% tampered proofs and certified digital data about batteries, support for >1000 of DBP/DPP management transactions per second (TPS). DSS response time <2 min.

Objectives

Goal 1
Goal 1

Develop raw materials recycling and re-use of components and/or products from end-of-life products technologies and urban mines, including efficient sorting technologies for separation and recycling and the sustainable embedment of the process regarding energy, resource and water efficiency.

Goal 2
Goal 2

The EU principles for sustainable raw materials ensure that extraction and processing are socially, economically, and environmentally responsible, aligning with the SDGs. AutoMat follows these principles by improving End-of-Life (EoL) battery recycling, reducing raw material extraction, and ensuring local communities’ benefit. It complies with EU laws, promotes electric mobility, and uses Digital Product Passports to minimize environmental impact.

Goal 3
Goal 3

The DSS will identify re-usable batteries for second-life applications, improving battery quality, reducing costs, and expanding their use across different markets.
