AutoMat Newsletter #2 Keep Rolling!

AutoMat 3rd General Assembly
The third General Assembly of the AutoMat project took place on 25–26 June 2025 at the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB), bringing together partners from across Europe. The meeting was a key opportunity to assess the progress made so far, review critical work packages, and align on upcoming pilot activities and data infrastructure developments. The event provided an ideal setting to discuss advanced manufacturing, battery recycling, and sustainability. The consortium also focused on preparing key deliverables ahead of the next project review, marking an important milestone in the AutoMat journey.

Battery Disassembly at Dogma Energia
At the beginning of 2025, a fruitful collaboration was launched between ERP Italia Servizi and Dogma Energia to support AutoMat’s activities on battery disassembly and data collection.
Focusing on end-of-life battery packs from Stellantis vehicles, the initiative aimed to generate practical insights for automation and process optimization. This joint effort marked an important step toward developing sustainable and replicable solutions for the recovery and reuse of battery components.

Giorgia Nicosia awarded at Battery 2030+
At the Battery 2030+ Annual Conference 2025 in Münster, Germany, Giorgia Nicosia, PhD candidate at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, received a Poster Prize from Chemistry Europe for her research within the AutoMat project.
Her work introduces an advanced diagnostic methodology to evaluate the ageing of lithium-ion LFP batteries, tested on cells previously used in hybrid buses. The study was conducted in collaboration with the University of Pavia, also a partner of AutoMat.

E-Tech Europe 2025 Fair
On April 15-16, the AutoMat project participated in the E-TECH Europe trade fair in Bologna, sharing a booth with the RENOVATE (Horizon Europe) and BATMASS (I3 – Interregional Innovation Investments Programme) projects. The participation was made possible thanks to the organization of ERP Italia, with the support of AFIL – Associazione Fabbrica Intelligente Lombardia and the University of Pavia.

AutoMat Consortium Welcomes FAAM
As of January 2025, SVOLT has left the AutoMat consortium, and we thank them for their contributions during the project’s early phase. From March 2025, FAAM has joined the consortium, taking over activities related to battery management and recycling.
AutoMat at the Forefront of Circular Innovation in Oviedo
AutoMat participated in the “Critical Raw Materials and Batteries” event in Oviedo on 11 March 2025, organized by ISMC for Li4Life.
Luca Polidori (ERP Italia Servizi) and Alberto González (LOMARTOV SL) presented the AutoMat, Retrieve. Recycle. Recharge., and RENOVATE EU projects, emphasizing collaborations and interoperable data sharing among Horizon-funded pilots such as SNAM, BeePlanet Factory, and FAAM.
What’s coming next
AutoMat Review Meeting
The next AutoMat project Review Meeting will take place on September 23rd and 24th at the MASMEC headquarters, located in the province of Bari, Puglia, Italy. This important milestone event will bring together the entire project consortium alongside the European Commission's Project Officer and external reviewers to assess the progress achieved and discuss the next phases of our EU-funded initiative. The two-day meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our technical achievements, present key deliverables, and receive valuable feedback from the evaluation panel in the beautiful setting of southern Italy.

AutoMat and RENOVATE: European Synergies for Sustainable Battery Recycling
A noteworthy aspect of the AutoMat Project is its collaboration with the RENOVATE initiative, part of the EU’s Battery 2030+ program. RENOVATE is developing chemistry-neutral, green hydrometallurgical methods for recycling end-of-life batteries and recovering critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. The two projects are coordinating their efforts to align digital tools, share data on material flows, and raise the technology readiness levels of their recycling processes.
To support public outreach, a joint event will be held on October 23, 2025, in Milan. The event will bring together industrial stakeholders, academic researchers, and civil society to explore challenges in battery recycling and the opportunities offered by digital traceability and sustainable design.
